Day 1: arrival day

Day 2: explore the historic centre of Luz St Sauveur and the Pont Napoleon on local walks with breathtaking views of the higher peaks.

Day 3: admire the spectacular waterfalls at the Pont d’Espagne, and then enjoy walks to the Lac de Gaube and the slopes of Vignemale (3,298m), the highest peak in the Pyrenees.

Day 4: watch out for playful marmots as you follow the GR10 path from Baréges, perhaps to the Lac de Glere with its views of the Néovielle National Park.

Day 5: free day - options include relaxing by the outdoor pool in Luz, or thermal spa, while more adventurous options include parascending and white-water rafting.

Day 6: walk to the towering amphitheatre of the Cirque de Gavarnie, or admire this monumental landscape on an ascent to the high col of the Horquette d’Alans.

Day 7: discover the beautiful Coubous Valley with an optional ascend to the summit of the Pic d’Aygues Cluses.

Day 8: departure day

ITINERARY TWO
Weeks of 13, 27 June; 25 July; 8, 22 Aug 2009

Day 1: arrival day

Day 2: visit the sleepy spa village at Baréges and from here walk down the green Bastan Valley, rich with butterflies and wild flowers.

Day 3: enjoy walks to the Cirque de Troumouse and the Lac des Gloriettes; a landscape every bit as good as its more famous neighbour at Gavarnie.

Day 4: walk beside the cascading river from the Pont d’Espagne into the Marcadau Valley to the Lacs de l’Embarrat through some of the finest scenery in the Pyrenees.

Day 5: free day - perhaps take the local bus to the world-famous pilgrimage town of Lourdes.

Day 6: discover the magnificent Cirque de Gavarnie. Weather permitting an ascent can be made to the Breche de Roland, a dramatic cleft in the cliffs, through which lies Spain.

Day 7: follow the cyclists to the top of the famous Col de Tourmalet and then walk to the beautiful Lac d’Oncet in the shadow of the Pic du Midi.

Day 8: departure day
