Denmark

Although it is made up of more than 400 islands, the Kingdom of Denmark is the smallest Scandinavian country. However, this relatively diminutive size is without a doubt part of the country's charm, and visitors will not be disappointed by the cobbled streets, traditional villages and beautifully clean countryside and coastline.

Historic capital
Copenhagen is one of the oldest capital cities in the world, and today its years of history are still apparent among the bustle and excitement of modern developments. Much of this country's fascinating history can be revisited in the city's numerous museums, in a performance at the Renaissance-inspired Royal Theatre, or at the Royal library, which dates back to 1648. One of the city's best-known landmarks is the Little Mermaid. Perched on a rock, her sculpture was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen tale and attracts over 1 million visitors a year.

Another claim the Danes have is to that of the oldest Monarchy in the world - it is said to date back to the 10th century. The home of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik is the 18 th century Amalienborg Palace. Situated in the city centre, the Royal residence consists of 4 palaces set around a courtyard, and they are said to be one of Europe's great architectural masterpieces.

If you feel tempted to visit this wonderful city, then why not do so in the most typically Danish way: by bicycle. The Danes are avid cyclists and the whole country, is perfectly adjusted for cycling. The Copenhagen and North Sealand tour takes you in a loop from the city, along the beautiful shore of the Øresund (Sound) dividing Denmark and Sweden and back through verdant green countryside and pretty villages. You also get the opportunity to visit Hamlet's Castle in Kronborg, where the infamous play by Shakespeare is set, as well as the Viking museum in Roskilde, which depicts the daily life of Denmark's Vikings and houses some of their ships.

Visit the islands
With 443 islands (only 143 of which are inhabited), Denmark certainly has a great deal to offer the visitor in terms of variety! The Southern Funen Islands tour is characterised by charming little villages, inns and cobbled streets that give the visitor a feeling of stepping back in time. The main town is Odense, and this idyllic town celebrated its millennium anniversary in 1988. Its name originates from the words 'Odins Vi', meaning Odin's Shrine, proof that the god Odin was worshipped here in pre-Christian times. Odense is also known as the home of the writer Hans Christian Andersen, and many of his fairytales are based in the beautiful surroundings of this region. Another attraction in the Funen area is a visit to Egeskov castle in Svendborg. Built in 1554 atop thousands of tree trunks in a lake, the castle lays claim to being the best-preserved renaissance castle in Europe.

Wherever you choose to visit in Denmark, you are sure to be charmed by the friendly people, tasty cuisine and picturesque countryside.
