Eastern Europe

During the Cold War the Soviet-controlled countries of Eastern Europe were very much off the tourist track. However since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and their accession to the European Union, increasing numbers of visitors are heading to the wonderfully preserved capitals of the east.

For a guided classic walking holiday, the mountains of the High Tatras are hard to beat. Straddling the border between Poland ans Slovakia, this is a region of dramatic peaks, beautiful glacial tarns and forgotten valleys, offering a unique chance to explore a spectacular mountain wilderness situated in the Slovakion village of Stary Smokovec.

Perhaps the most iconic symbol of Europe's post-war divide, Berlin is now the vibrant and cosmopolitan capital of a reunified Germany. A guided city break here is a fascinating trip through this epicentre of European history where you'll see old and new side by side. Landmarks on this tour include the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the beautiful palaces and gardens at Potsdam. We'll also visit the modern museums and galleries that contribute to the city's exciting cultural scene.

Prague is another capital that has emerged as a popular city break destination. Known as the city of a hundred spires, its buildings tell the story of six hundred years of architectural history. Prague also has a rich musical heritage with plenty of evening concerts on offer. Starting in Wencleslas Square some highlights include the medieval old town, Prague Castle, the Jewish Quarter and a boat trip along the Vltava river.

With a fascinating culture and attractive scenery, Hungary is certainly worth further exploration, and a great way to do this is by bike on a guided cycling tour. For an extra bit of pampering, our Hungarian Spa Tour combines beautiful scenery with relaxation in magnificent thermal spas; a wonderful way to end the day. If you prefer a relaxing self-guided option, then a cycling holiday based on the shores of beautiful Lake Balaton certainly fits the bill. With options to visit spas and ancient castles, and enjoy the lakeside cycle routes, this is a flexible and enjoyable holiday. Alternatively a longer guided tour will take you from Vienna to Budapest, the Hungarian capital. Cycling past pretty villages, forests and wonderful Lake Balaton, this is great way to see the countryside.

For a real trip behind the Iron Curtain, a holiday to Russia is a fascinating experience. Combining the contrasting cities of Moscow and St Petersburg, our two-centre guided city break will take you to a series of world-famous monuments. Starting in Moscow you'll visit the flamboyant St Basil's cathedral and the immense fortress of the Kremlin. After taking the express train to St Petersburg you'll be immersed in one of the World's most elaborate cities with visits to the Winter Palace and amazing Hermitage Museum.
