Ireland
With acres of green hills, a fascinating history and renowned hospitality, Ireland is a favourite location for many walkers. Divided since 1922 between the British north and the Irish Republic in the south, Ireland had a turbulent political history throughout the 20th century. However, since the IRA ceasefire in 1998, Ireland has been very much back on the tourist trail with many flocking to admire the wild beauty of its mountain and coastal landscapes. At the same time the Irish economy has boomed and the country now enjoys one of the world’s highest standards of living.
Outside the capital, Dublin, Ireland is a sparsely populated country with a number of wild upland areas which circle the flat inland plains. On the east coast are the Wicklow Mountains, while in the west lie the mountains of Connemara and McGillycuddy's Reeks in County Kerry. Mountain walking in Ireland can be hard going with few paths and steep rocky descents, however the reward is a taste of some of the wildest parts of the British Isles.
Ireland’s exposed west coast, battered by the Atlantic swells, contains mile after mile of unspoilt cliffs and beaches. Some of the best scenery can be found on the Dingle Way which follows one of the four prominent peninsulas that jut out from south-west Ireland. On this guided or self-guided trail you’ll walk from the garden sands of Camp beach, towards Dingle Town and its legendary craic. The trail then continues following the Atlantic Cliffs, to the historic departure point of St Brendon.
Alternatively, enjoy this stunning area by bike. The Dingle Peninsula cycling holiday starts and finishes in Killarney, taking you along the Peninsula to Dingle and the picturesque Slea Head, before crossing the Conor Pass to Castlegregory then back over the spine of the Peninsula. The famous Ring of Kerry takes you around the Kerry Peninsula through breathtaking coastal and mountain landscapes. Stop off at the many coastal villages and enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere that makes any visit to Ireland so special.
