Slovenia & Croatia

Slovenia and Croatia are two of the independent countries that emerged from the break-up of Yugoslavia in the early 1990's. Whilst both are increasingly linked to the rest of western Europe, their different cultures and fascinating history adds a new dimension to any holiday.

Slovenia is the most politically and economically advanced of the former Yugoslav countries having joined the European Union in 2004 and adopting the euro as its currency in January 2007. For walkers the key attractions are the Julian Alps, one part of the range of mountains that stretch across Europe. Our resort of Kranjska Gora is well-located to take advantage of all that this beautiful mountain region has to offer. On a guided Classic Walking holiday you can choose between easier lower-level walks which visit green valleys, foaming rivers and outstanding waterfalls, or harder walks that follow more challenging routes through the lofty peaks above. Rich with wildlife and still largely unspoiled by the trappings of modern tourism, the Julian Alps are a refreshing alternative to the more famous alpine resorts of Austria and Switzerland.

In the winter Kranjska Gora makes a great base for our Winter Walking and Snowshoeing holidays which offers a popular way to discover this awe-inspiring snowy landscape.

For cyclist, the Slovenian Vineyards and Hot Springs tour takes you through the Northeast corner of Slovenia, an area rich in vineayrds, thermal springs and rolling landscapes. This holiday is offered as a self-guided and guided tour. The picturesque townof Bled with its lakeside setting and views towards, the Julian Alps is the perfect setting for the Around Lake Bled cycling holiday. Enjoy cycling rides to the surroundingcharming villages, explore the lush green meadows of the Radovna Valley and finish the day relaxing in your hotel's thermal waters.

Dalmatian National Parks and Islands combines cycling with accommodation onboard a motor yacht. Start and finish in the town of Trogir, a Unesco World Heritage Site and cycle and sail around the Telasica, Kovnati Islands and Krka Canyon National Parks. In the evenings, relax on the yacht and watch the sun set over this idyllic area.

Croatia suffered much greater fighting in its war of independence with Serbia and Bosnia and for many years its once busy Adriatic holiday resorts were devoid of visitors. However, in recent years the country has re-established itself as a holiday destination with many flocking to its beautiful beaches, historic cities and enthralling islands. The small harbour town of Baska Voda is a popular base for our Classic Walking holidays . Here you can enjoy walks along the Adriatic coast, and in the foothills of the Biokovo Mountains. With opportunities to take a boat to the island of Brac, and visit the medieval city of Split, you'll also get a good insight in Croatian history and culture.
