Generally regarded as Europe's most mountainous country, Switzerland is also widely recognised for its beautiful scenery and outstanding walking.

In many ways our stereotypical images of Switzerland are confirmed in reality; cows do wear over-sized bells, picture-postcard villages do look like the set for an episode of Heidi, and the chocolate and local cheeses are superb. However Switzerland has also developed as one of Europe's most prosperous and modern countries with attractive cities and an excellent network of public transport. As an independent traveller arriving at Geneva, Zurich or Basel airports you'll find a clean and punctual train waiting to take you to your holiday destination.

Another feature of Switzerland is its mix of cultures and languages. The Italian-speaking lake region to the south, the French speaking west and the German-speaking centre and east all have their different characters. You may even encounter Romansh, Switzerland 's fourth official language spoken by 1% of the population.
